Submittal Requirements
Step 1:
Review Eligibility criteria. Use the online Applicaton
Form to register for the Cavin Family Traveling
Fellowship.
Step 2:
Upon our receipt of your Application, you will be issued a Password allowing you to log on
and access the allocated work area on the Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship server.
Using your ID and password, you may upload your entry along with the required
information; you can start uploading your project and see what it will look like to you, the
general public and the review panel. You may revisit and revise these as many times as
you wish before you finally “submit” it before the deadline. As long as you do not "submit"
your project, it will only be visible by you and you can change the images and their
sequence and any text that you uploaded for display. Once you "submit" your upload it cannot be changed. It only becomes
visible to the general user of the website once the Committee has approved its display.
Step 3:
After submitting, you may no longer make any changes or modifications unless requested
by the Committee.
The Preliminary Design Review Panel will review all entries on March 18, 2010. If you
are selected as one of the finalists, you must provide (at your own expense) between two
and four (at the discretion of the Entrant) 20” x 20” physical boards for the final selection
process. The graphic content of these boards shall be identical to the previously submitted
digital submission evaluated during the Preliminary Review. Boards are due at Cal Poly Department of Architecture by 5:00 pm PST on April 7, 2010. These boards shall become the property of
the Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship. Lettering shall be large enough for exhibit viewing.
The graphic composition of the panels is at the discretion of the Entrant. Each panel shall
be 20" x 20" foam core or other light-weight, warp-proof material. To accomdate the
display system, a 1/4” margin should be left free of any lettering at the top and bottom of
the panels. The Entrant’s name and “2010” shall be on the back of each board. Each
finalist shall also submit a wet-signed Letter of Agreement with the boards.
Step 4:
The Final Design Review and selection of the Cavin Scholar and Alternate will be held on
on April 9, 2010. Winners will be announced April 12, 2010, and all entries will be
posted on the Fellowship web site.
Image Format:
The 2009 Cavin Family Traveling Fellowship Competition requires submittal of all
material in digital format.
For the finalists, a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 boards with images with graphic
information sufficient to fully illustrate each entry are required. Boards shall be square;
finalists will be required to provide 20” x 20” physical boards. Animations are not eligible.
During the Design Competition, all images with graphic information that will be included on
the physical boards have to be uploaded to this Website from within the Submittal Work
Area. A maximum of 16 individual images are permitted. (No additional information can be
added to the physical boards at a later stage!)
Floor Plans and Site Plans are required for all entries. Other drawings, i.e., interior and
exterior views, sections, axonometric views, perspective views, elevations, diagrams,
graphic data and details may be included to fully explain the design concepts. Any visuals
containing Entrant identification or logo will be rejected.
Digital Format:
The digital image files must be in a web compliant format with the extensions .jpg / .jpeg /
.gif / .png. Width is 3000 pixels. Height is 3000 pixels. e.g. 20”x20" @150dpi = 3000x3000 pixels. JPG images need to be set to RGB Color before
saving - most browsers can't display JPG images in the print color space CMYK. Please use “high quality” compression if saving JPEGs from Photoshop. This will yield a good quality/compression ratio.
The maximum file size is 5MB.
File Names:
The name of the image file should not contain any empty space or special characters.
Please use letters and numbers (a-z/A-Z), dashes and underscores only and make certain
your file has the correct extension (.jpg/.jpeg/.gif/.png/)
Text Information (Description):
The following text is required for a complete entry:
I. Project Description (max. 200 words)
Example of possible paragraphs:
1. Context
2. Program/Scope
3. Special Challenges/Unusual Characteristics
4. Design Solution
