Description
HELLYER HILL CYCLING CENTER PROPOSES A NEW INTERACTION OF CYCLIST AND NATURE. THE LOOPING FORM THAT RISES OVER AND SWEEPS WITHIN THE EXISTING HELLYER VELODROME AND BACK OUT TO THE COYOTE CREEK TRAIL UNITES CYCLIST BOTH AMATEUR AND AVID. VISTAS AND NEW ADJACENCY PLACES CYCLISTS AND NATURE AT DIFFERENT VANTAGE POINTS WITHIN THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY. SUCH RELATIONSHIPS ALLOW FOR A MORE ENGAGED AND INTERACTIVE COMMUNITY WITHIN THE SPORT OF CYCLING AND NATURE AT LARGE.
THE FORM FOR THE CENTER WAS GENERATED BY THE UNIFIED MOVEMENT THAT UNITES ALL CYCLISTS; THE LOOPED VECTOR OF PEDALING IS GRAPHED THEN EXTRUDED. THIS PATH WAS INSPIRATION FOR NEW RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DIFFERENT LEVELS OF CYCLISTS AND THE NATURAL WORLD. SUCH MOVEMENT ALLOWS FOR INTERACTION BUT CONTINUED TRAVEL FORWARD. LOOPING IN THE CONSTRICTED COYOTE CREEK NATURE CORRIDOR INCREASES ITS LIMITED AREA AND VIBRANCY AND ALLOWS FOR NEW HUMAN INTERACTION AND UNDERSTANDING.
THE HELLYER HILL LOOPED FORM CREATES A LARGELY OPEN BUT SHADED PAVILION TO SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL CYCLISTS AND BIKING COMMUTERS. KEY PATH ADJACENCY IN PLAN ALLOW FOR CONTINUOUS CYCLIST MOVEMENT AND INTERACTION. COMMUTER, PROFESSIONALS, AND AMATEURS CAN NOW CO-MINGLE WITH NATURE IN THE NEW HELLYER HILL CYCLING CENTER.
STRUCTURAL MODULES WERE INSPIRED BY THE BIKE WHEEL. A SINGLE COLUMN SUPPORTS A STEEL FRAME AND CORTEN MESH CLAD EXTENSIVE ROOF STRUCTURE THROUGH LONG TENSION CABLES. THESE SPOKE LIKE STRUCTURAL BAYS SWEEP AROUND THE VELODROME AND ADAPT TO PROGRAM. THESE UNITS CAN BECOME PART OF A LARGER NETWORK OF BIKE SHELTERS, RESTROOMS, AND SAN JOSE BIKE SHARE PROGRAM ALONG THE COYOTE CREEK TRAIL. THE EXTENSIVE ROOF PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR LOCAL SPECIES AND CAN BECOME SYMBOLS OF A NEW BIKE ORIENTED FUTURE ACROSS THE VALLEY.
